With valentines day is just round the corner and many couples planning a romanic weekend together, we thought it was a good excuse to take a look at some of the health benefits of sex.  There is a lot of discrepancy in the research about the average amount of sex couples have but reading this article might just give you a few more reasons to get intimate more often.

Boost Your Immune System

According to research, people who have sex more than twice a week have enhanced immune systems. This is measured by an increase in the level of antibodies in the blood. Antibodies are the bodies natural defence against virus’s and bacteria and play a key role in fighting off illness and infection.

Great Exercise

Most people don’t think of sex as exercise but just like many other forms of day to day physical activities, it may well count towards your daily moderate exercise targets.

Sex can get your heart rate going, uses muscles that you may not know existed and of course burns calories. For the average person, sex burns 5 calories per minute and even more if you are a little more adventurous.

Reduce Stress

Not only dose sex increase closeness to your partner, it also relieves stress as it releases endorphins (your body’s natural feel-good hormone). Sex is also great for boosting one’s self esteem and overall happiness.

Improve Sleep

Ever feel yourself nodding off quickly after sex? If you have trouble sleeping sex may just be your cure as a hormone called prolactin is released. This creates the feeling of relaxation, comfort and satisfaction that might just help you getter a better nights sleep.

During sex, a women’s pelvic floor muscles contract and work hard. similar to core and pelvic floor strengthening workouts like pilates, this increases strength. One of the benefits of a stronger pelvic floor is that is improves bladder control/incontinence. Who needs Pilates when you can have sex instead!?

Reduce the Risk of Prostate Cancer

According to a Harvard study, men who ejaculate 21 or more times a month have been shown to be up to 33% less likely to get prostate cancer compared with men who reported 4 to 7 ejaculations a month throughout their lifetimes.

Another Australian based study looking at 2338 mens showed similar results. Men averaging 4.6 to seven ejaculations a week were 36% less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 70 compared to men who ejaculated less than 2.3 times a week.

Orgasms Reduce Pain

Forget about the painkillers and anti-inflammatory’s, sex may be your cure. According to scientists, orgasms can block back and leg pain. It has also been good for cramps, arthritic pain and in some cases headache.
